The tower, which was built prior to the 12th century directly above Škofja Loka Castle, has tower-shaped fortifications, characteristic of the Central European early Feudal period. The tower has a square floorplan and is surrounded by a moat and walls. The tower had a mainly defensive role, most likely protecting the entrance to the Poljane valley, until it was demolished by an earthquake in 1511.
